Women in franchising
Armed with a degree in Electrical
and Electronic Engineering from
Glasgow University, 37-year-old Karen worked for Motorola Semiconductors for fourteen years, before making the leap
into self-employment with Auditel in March 2004.
"Franchising seemed like a good way to bridge the gaps in my skill set while still being self-employed."
With two young children, Karen had some very specific criteria. These included control of her working hours, the flexibility to run a business to her own plan, strong support from a central office and a good return on her investment.
'Once I began speaking to existing Affiliates, it was obvious that the depth of experience and knowledge in the network was one of the major strengths of the Auditel franchise.'
Karen has taken advantage of Auditel's ethos of cooperation and the option to work in partnership with colleagues, enabling her to work with much larger clients in her start-up phase.
One of her most important clients – an insurance brokers with 20 offices– is joint ventured with an Auditel colleague and realised savings of 40% on a call spend of £130,000.This has generated an important income stream on which Karen can build over the next few years.
However, it isn’t just the good income-earning potential that Karen appreciates as an Auditel franchisee.
"Every day is different: one day I'm putting my detective skills to use analysing my clients' bills and looking for opportunities to restructure their expenditure, the next day I'm meeting a potential new client or visiting one of my existing clients. What with meeting suppliers, going to Regional and Local meetings, networking for new clients and looking after those I already work with, life is never dull."
Does she feel that the Auditel franchise has lived up to her expectations and met her objectives?
"Yes. I have two small children and being an Auditel consultant means I have more control over my time while still being able to enjoy the challenges and rewards of working. Within five years I plan for my business to bring in £100,000. Auditel has definitely realised my ambition to be self-employed and to enjoy the rewards of my own hard work. In time it will also enable me to achieve personal goals such as a trip to Australia and a second home in Italy!"
