Sonic Golf, the United Kingdom and Ireland’s first golf club cleaning franchise said it is expectant with findings of new HSBC research, which estimates that Tiger Woods’ European trip will boost the golf economy by €250 million.
The new report estimates that Tiger Woods’ three-week stay in Europe, including the Ryder Cup at Ireland’s K Club, will boost Europe’s golf economy by an estimated €250 million. The research was carried out for HSBC by Professor Tom Cannon, Dean of Business at the University of Buckingham.
Prof. Cannon suggests Woods’ presence results in tens of thousands of extra spectators, boosts radio and television coverage by at least 25%, generates millions through tourism, hospitality and sponsorship and also drives people to try golf for themselves.
Cannon, an expert in sports business and finance, told the Irish Examiner: “The size and reach of the Tiger economy is remarkable. We estimate the total value on the core golf economy to be as high as £170m (€250m).”
“Drawing these figures together gives an astonishing picture not only of the impact of a single, outstanding sportsman, but of the growing power and influence of sport and sporting celebrity,” said Prof Cannon.
Cannon added that sponsorship and hospitality could generate an additional €5.3m, including €735,000 in advertising and €735,000 in travel and accommodation generated through additional spectators.

About Sonic Golf
Sonic Golf is the UK’s first golf club cleaning franchise. The company recently launched a unique golf franchise with the United Kingdom and Ireland, following successful completion of its business pilot. A spokesperson for Sonic Golf said: “We provide the golf club cleaning machines, and all other equipment, to franchisees based on a rental agreement. We also offer extensive marketing and management support.”
He added: “The simplicity of the Sonic Golf business model means that franchisees don’t need to do the billing. Sonic Golf deals with billing on behalf of franchisees. With a minimum of administration required, Sonic Golf lets franchisees get straight into driving their business.”
The Sonic Golf golf club cleaning system is based on solid ultrasonic technology. It has been used for over forty years to clean medical, electronic and other high precision equipment. Ultrasonics produce millions of tiny bubbles in solution, these bubbles implode when they come into contact with any additional surface. This quickly, and safely, removes any surface contamination.”
Ultrasonic technology works so effectively when cleaning golf clubs because the solution reaches all parts of the club head, gripping dirt and other contamination more quickly and effectively than any other cleaning method.
